OpenAI marks GPT-5.6 Sol, GPT-5.6 Terra and GPT-5.6 Luna in its current ChatGPT pricing overview for the Pro plan as "Unlimited" with an asterisk. The change was pointed out by developer and AI observer Ian Nuttall on X.
The decisive restriction is in the asterisk: OpenAI writes on the pricing page that unlimited use must be reasonable and in line with the policies. On the Pro page, OpenAI also speaks of "Unlimited messages and uploads", but reserves the right to apply safeguards against abusive use.
What "Unlimited" means for GPT-5.6
For Pro users, the key distinction is between GPT-5.6 Sol and GPT-5.6 Sol Pro.
Standard GPT-5.6 Sol usage is marked as "Unlimited" with an asterisk on the pricing overview. GPT-5.6 Sol Pro is not automatically included. The Pro variant still has its own quotas.
According to OpenAI, the following currently apply to chat:
- Pro 200 US dollars: up to 170 messages per day with GPT-5.6 Sol Pro; together with GPT-6 Pro, an additional combined daily limit of 200 messages applies.
- Pro 100 US dollars: a shared quota of 50 messages per week for GPT-6 Pro and GPT-5.6 Sol Pro.
GPT-6 Pro therefore also remains explicitly limited.
Terra and Luna are not simply additional chat models
The model overview can easily give the impression that Pro users can select Sol, Terra and Luna directly in the normal model menu. According to OpenAI, that is not the case.
GPT-5.6 Terra and Luna cannot be selected separately in standard chats. Depending on the plan, however, they are available in ChatGPT Work and Codex. Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise users get access to Sol, Terra and Luna there.
"Unlimited" in the price table therefore does not necessarily describe three freely selectable models in the normal chat, but the use of the respective models in the supported ChatGPT products.
The change comes in the middle of the Pro plan restructuring
OpenAI now offers two Pro tiers. The 100-dollar plan offers, according to the company, five times more usage than Plus, the 200-dollar plan 20 times more. New sign-ups and upgrades to Pro for 200 US dollars have been temporarily paused since 10 September; existing 200-dollar subscriptions continue to run.
In parallel, hints recently appeared of a possibly even more expensive plan. Our article on the possible ChatGPT Pro Max for 500 dollars puts the so far unconfirmed leak into context.
Whether OpenAI deliberately introduced the now visible "Unlimited" figures for GPT-5.6 as a compensation for the new price structure is not confirmed. Nuttall suspects this connection, but OpenAI has so far given no such reason on its official pages.
Why this matters for creators and marketing teams
For teams that use ChatGPT continuously for research, content production, analysis or coding, the planned capacity matters more than the model name. If standard GPT-5.6 usage is available in the Pro plan without a rigid message limit, that reduces the risk of hitting a quota in the middle of longer workflows.
The exception remains the particularly compute-intensive Pro models. Anyone using GPT-5.6 Sol Pro or GPT-6 Pro must still watch the respective limits.
At the same time, OpenAI is expanding ChatGPT more strongly as a marketing and commerce platform. The expansion of ChatGPT Ads with Sponsored Agents as well as HubSpot and Shopify integrations fits this picture.
