Instagram is reworking 2026 several core usage situations at the same time: Instants brings spontaneous, unedited photos directly into DMs, users gain more influence over recommended topics, and Meta is testing Series as a structured format for episodic Reels. For creators and brands, the key takeaway is less a single feature than the direction: Instagram wants to connect private communication, algorithmic discovery and recurring video formats more closely.
The current feature status was summarised by Social Media Examiner. Several of the features can now be verified via Meta itself or additional platform sources.
Instants: spontaneous photos instead of polished feed posts
Meta launched Instants officially on the 13 of May 2026. Users take a photo directly within Instagram, cannot upload it from the camera roll and cannot edit it further apart from adding a caption. It is shared with close friends or accounts that follow each other.
The images disappear once they have been viewed, or at the latest after 24 hours. Recipients also cannot save Instants via screenshot or screen recording. Within Instagram, Meta says the feature is globally available; the separate Instants app, by contrast, is only offered in selected countries.
For brands, Instants is therefore not a new reach channel like Reels. The format is more interesting for small community segments, event moments, behind-the-scenes content or deliberately unpolished updates. The fact that several Instants can later be combined into a Story creates a bridge back to the established Story format.
"Your Algorithm" gives users more influence over recommendations
In parallel, Instagram is expanding control over its recommendation algorithm. With Your Algorithm, users can see topics that Instagram assigns to their interests and add or remove categories. Meta confirmed in May that the feature is available on Reels and Explore in English-speaking markets and is to be extended to further surfaces. Instagram chief Adam Mosseri also showed tests in June for significantly more prominent access points, such as directly from the Feed and Reels.
For German accounts, availability should therefore still be checked in one's own account; Meta's official announcement does not allow the conclusion of a nationwide German-language rollout.
For social teams, the main change is this: a clearly recognisable topic becomes more important than attempts to game individual supposed algorithm signals. If users can actively boost or downgrade interests, content benefits when Instagram and people quickly understand what it is about. This also fits with Meta's stronger use of automated content classification and the recently tightened labelling of AI profiles on Instagram.
Reels Series: single clips become episodic formats
Even more interesting for creators is the test of Series on Instagram and Facebook. Meta confirmed to TechCrunch in early June that selected creators can bundle new and existing Reels into a series. Each episode gets a place in its own hub on the profile; viewers can open further episodes, save series and watch on later.
This gives content that already works in several parts – tutorials, challenges, product series, learning formats or ongoing stories – a noticeably better structure for the first time than individual Reels on the profile. According to TechCrunch, Meta is also examining monetisation options but has not yet announced a concrete model.
This direction fits the group's broader video overhaul. On the television, Meta is also experimenting with longer and episodic formats; more on this in the article on the Instagram TV app and the new CTV tests.
Instagram Plus remains the paid parallel path
Alongside this, Meta has built a paid feature layer with Instagram Plus. Meta announced the global rollout in June. Included are, among other things, Story Spotlight, a possible Story duration of 48 hours, additional viewer insights and more profile customisation.
Srocket has already placed the Plus strategy in the context of Meta's new AI and premium subscriptions. For marketers the distinction matters: Instants, algorithm controls and Series change how the platform is used and how content is structured; Instagram Plus sells additional benefits on top of that.
What social teams should take away
In the short term, nobody needs to rebuild their editorial plan because of a single feature. It does make sense, however, to plan existing content so that it works across several Instagram logics: Reels for discovery, Stories and Instants for closer community contact, and recurring series for topics that need more than one clip.
The fact that Instagram now reports 297 million monthly active users in the EU also makes these product shifts relevant for German brands. The central trend is clear: Instagram is moving away from a single feed and towards several specialised surfaces for discovery, community and longer-term creator relationships.
