Snap has awarded Robert Downey Jr. the honorary title "Chief Customer Experience Officer" for its AR brand SPECS on 20 October 2026. The actor is meant to do more than appear as an advertising face: he is to help develop content and demonstrate how the glasses are used in everyday situations. To kick things off, Snap is publishing its own video series and running visuals around major US sports broadcasts.
Why Snap is turning product demonstrations into a content format
According to Snap's official newsroom, SPECS are transparent augmented reality glasses: digital windows and functions are overlaid onto the real environment and controlled with hands and voice. That is a different experience from pure camera or audio glasses.
The new series is intended to show scenarios from work, sport, entertainment and art. The episodes appear on the SPECS website and on YouTube, with more to follow. According to Snap, the partnership also includes developing new Lenses and possible hardware and live experiences. Concrete features developed by Downey are not yet confirmed as a finished product.
The marketing problem behind this is easy to understand: a well-known face can create attention, but it cannot explain how spatial AR works in a static advertising poster. Episodic demos are meant to make the benefit visible. Similar questions about recurring content use are covered in our guide to episodic video formats for brands.
From YouTube video to sports broadcast
Snap launched the campaign on 20 October in the context of the NBA game New York Knicks vs. Philadelphia 76ers. A further TV appearance of an episode is announced for Game 1 of the World Series on 23 October. The mix of series episodes and sports reach is deliberately multi-stage: first build product understanding, then draw people to the format through high-reach live events.
Unlike a classic one-off influencer ad, the actor is meant to be involved across several touchpoints in product development and communication. However, this does not mean a measured sales increase or a confirmed conversion rate. Reach, viewed demo videos and pre-orders are separate KPIs.
Snap is also experimenting with immersive formats in its advertising products, for example with the Harry Potter AR campaign with HBO Max. The new SPECS series, by contrast, markets Snap's own hardware product, not an additional advertising placement on Snapchat.
Price and availability: no German launch yet
The AR glasses were already presented in June. According to the Snap investor announcement, they cost 2.195 US dollars, and pre-ordering requires a 200 dollar refundable deposit. The market launch originally announced for autumn 2026 initially covers the USA, the United Kingdom and France. Germany has not so far been named as a launch market. Further technical context can be found in our article on the price and German launch of Snap SPECS.
Editorial assessment: The new element is the ongoing explanation of a product that needs explaining by a prominent face – not the first launch of a Snap AR glasses model. Whether the campaign creates demand can only be judged on the basis of later, reliable sales or usage data.
