Lowe’s Media Network is expanding its advertising offer across Roku, DoorDash, Reddit, TikTok and YouTube and wants to measure the additional revenue generated by campaigns with Ipsos. The US home improvement retailer is thereby linking retail data more closely with social media, streaming and commerce. For German media teams, this is primarily a question of comparable advertising effectiveness.
Retail media has to prove additional revenue
Purchase-close ad formats often report sales that are attributed to an ad. It does not automatically follow that these sales would not have happened without the advertising. According to a report by Marketing Dive from 13 October, Lowe’s is working with Ipsos to measure advertising effectiveness more independently. Planned are individually tailored marketing mix models and attribution approaches; for large advertisers, Lowe’s announces reports on the incremental return on ad spend.
This is an important methodological distinction: an external measurement partner is not yet a published audit of the results. In the specific Lowe’s programme, the control groups, model assumptions and comparability across platforms remain unknown.
The IAB/IAB Europe guidelines on incrementality distinguish between experiments with a credible counterfactual, econometric models and other methods. Their common standard: control biases and separate the additional effect from purchases that would have happened anyway. Our overview of full-funnel measurement in retail media explains this challenge in more detail.
What changes for social ads and streaming
TikTok and YouTube bring video into the retail data logic, Reddit adds search and community discussions, Roku streaming reach and DoorDash a further commerce context. The channels fulfil different tasks: discovery, product research, recall and purchase. Advertisers should therefore not use the same KPI for all five.
Before the current expansion, Lowe’s already sold ads on its own sites as well as off-site, for example via Google, Meta and Pinterest. The official Lowe’s announcement from 2024 describes this earlier setup. What is new are the specifically named additional partners, the Ipsos cooperation and the bundled offer, not the idea of off-site retail media itself.
The development complements the merging of marketing and digital commerce under Lowe’s CMO. Walmart Connect likewise combines retail data with CTV and social media.
AI search is being sold as a retailer service
Lowe’s also announces a service for Answer Engine Optimization (AEO): brands should become easier to find in AI-supported product answers. Public, reliable performance figures for this offer are still lacking. More mentions in AI answers also do not equal additional revenue. The proximity of retail media and AEO is nonetheless notable: retailers no longer want to sell only ad placements, but also product discoverability.
Classification for German advertisers
The changes apply to Lowe’s US business and are not a confirmed rollout in Germany. For budget review here, however, IAB Europe with its Commerce Media Measurement Standards V2.1 provides a concrete comparison framework: definitions of sales, attribution and incrementality are standardised.
Before a company mixes offsite retail media with social or CTV budgets, it should clarify for each activation: Who measures? Which attribution window applies? Which control group or modelling logic separates incremental sales from organic purchases? This is exactly what Lowe’s new strategy will have to be measured against.
