The New York City Marathon is becoming a huge brand festival in 2026. For the 50th anniversary of the course through all five boroughs, beverage makers, beauty brands and retailers are turning race weekend from 30 October to 2 November into a meeting point for runners, fans and creators. The trend behind it is also relevant for German companies: run clubs and sports communities are developing into platforms for real encounters and digital content.
On 1 November 2026, the marathon again runs through Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Manhattan. The organizer New York Road Runners already reported in spring over 240.000 applications from more than 160 countries, almost 20 percent more than 2025. Around 60.000 participants and over two million spectators along the course are expected.
The brand suddenly belongs to the running club
The real marketing value is created long before the starting gun. People arrange training sessions together, share routes on Strava, film their first half marathon and celebrate finishers as a group. A sporting event therefore delivers not just one day of reach, but many small occasions for content and community.
How large the movement has become is shown by the Strava annual report 2025: the number of running clubs on the platform rose within one year to 3,5 times the previous level. Club events grew by 50 percent. Marketing thereby shifts from pure messaging toward organizing experiences that people want to take part in themselves. Our article on Strava's growing fitness community also covers this development.
Celsius builds a creator event instead of a classic advertising stand
A good example is Club Celsius, a pop-up in the New York neighbourhood of Williamsburg. According to its official announcement21 of October, the brand has planned a full program over four days: group runs, DJ sets, a dating and comedy event, opportunities to design your own fan merchandise, and a meetup with Olympic marathon medallist Molly Seidel on the Monday after the race.
Social media personalities from fitness, entertainment and reality TV are among those involved. The pop-up thus doubles as a backdrop for videos, personal experiences and social posts. The brand creates the occasion, and the participants supply many of the stories.
The approach recalls the link between sport and brand communication at Liquid I.V. and McLaren: a credible connection to performance or recovery helps integrate the product story into fans' everyday lives.
New Balance sells the marathon in three stages
The merchandise also follows a carefully planned timetable. The official equipment partner New Balance has announced three collections: the regular running collection from 10 September, the finisher line from 8 October, and a limited Five Borough collection exclusively at the marathon expo from 29 to 31 October.
Each release forms its own communication moment. The special collection also combines design with New York's street culture and the anniversary of the course. The marathon thus becomes an event that fans follow in the shop weeks in advance.
Why beauty brands are also joining the marathon
The industry report from Digiday from 30 October names a striking newcomer: Maybelline is the official beauty partner of the New York Marathon for the first time and is planning activations around race day. Young lifestyle and wellness brands are also taking part with pop-ups and offers.
This fits the development of running as a lifestyle and community topic. The point of contact does not have to be sportswear: beauty, nutrition, recovery, food and beverage, and local experiences all fit the social side of a large running event. What matters is that the offer genuinely suits the race weekend for visitors.
The idea can be transferred to German cities
Not every brand needs two million spectators. A city run, a weekly run club or a half marathon can trigger a similar mechanism on a smaller scale: shared preparation, encounters on site and recurring content for social media.
For German marketing teams, three building blocks stand out: genuine value for the community, creators or club members with a connection to the topic, and a programme running over several weeks rather than just on event day. The best visuals often come from the people who take part. Unlike pure advertising, such collaborations ideally leave behind a lasting community.
The New York City Marathon shows where event marketing is heading: away from the one-off sponsor logo and towards recurring meeting points, product moments and stories that people tell each other themselves.
