United Airlines is bringing the sales and operations of its advertising network Kinective Media closer together with the partnerships of its frequent flyer programme MileagePlus. The reorganisation, which became known in October 2026, is meant to tie the advertising business to the expansion of Starlink Wi-Fi, seatback screens and its own ad technology. According to the available reports, the company is not shutting Kinective down. For advertisers, this is an example of how valuable customer data alone does not create a scalable media network.
Adweek reported on the internal reorganisation on 12 October. According to a staff message from United sales chief Andrew Nocella, as cited by media outlets, the media sales and operations teams are to be merged into the MileagePlus partnership organisation. The statement that Kinective is profitable but not yet scalable enough comes from this reporting, not from a published group balance sheet for the media network.
The real bottleneck is the aircraft
The 2024 launched Kinective Media combines advertising space in the United app, on the website and on board with anonymised audience segments drawn from travel behaviour and MileagePlus data. The provider currently promotes access to more than 108 million US traveller profiles. This figure describes a marketable audience base, not active ad contacts or people reached once in a campaign.
At launch, 2024 United cited almost 100.000 seatback screens and potentially 3,5 hours of attention per traveller, derived from average flight time. In June 2026 United already reported more than 167.000 seatback screens across almost 900 aircraft. Flight time is, however, not a measured visibility or contact time for ads.
Hardware and connectivity are still being rolled out: in a Starlink announcement from 22 June 2026, United reported more than 400 equipped aircraft and projected just under 1.000 by year end. These figures are partly current fleet counts and partly rollout targets, not evidence that the whole fleet was fully equipped in October.
Why MileagePlus is moving closer to the advertising business
For brands, air travellers are an attractive audience: booking timing, route, travel frequency and loyalty status can provide relevant context. At the same time, operational questions arise. Do ad contacts have to be combined across several screens? Can bookings or other follow-up actions be measured without passing personal travel profiles on to advertisers? And how much inventory is actually available on each flight?
In its official product description, United explains that advertising customers do not receive directly identifying passenger data and work with aggregated segments. The company also mentions an opt-out option for US customers. For German or European campaigns, this does not replace a review of legal basis, consent and responsibilities.
The closer alignment with MileagePlus is therefore also commercially plausible: United can already market loyalty partnerships and its own offers across many touchpoints, while new inflight formats first need technical reach and reliable proof of performance.
What German media teams can learn from this
Kinective is currently primarily a US offering; the reorganisation does not confirm any new booking option for Germany. Anyone evaluating airline inventory should still request four figures: verifiable contacts per channel, measurement methodology for reach and visibility, data sharing arrangements, and demonstrable added value compared with existing travel media.
The principle extends well beyond aviation. Delta and Lufthansa are developing comparable travel media approaches. With Walmart Connect the emphasis is more on purchase data, while with Uber Eats it is on whether advertising actually generates additional business.
The lesson from United's restructuring: first-party data is a head start, not a finished advertising space. If inventory, delivery and attribution lag behind, even a data-rich provider has to adjust its sales organisation.
