Volkswagen extends its partnership with U.S. Soccer through 2032 and increases its commitment to American soccer. The agreement, announced on 9 October 2026, covers all 27 US national teams, additional youth programs and the new national training center in Atlanta. For brands, the key point is how VW links the partnership with athletes, social content and activations on matchday.
From sponsor logo to long-term creator program
Volkswagen has supported the federation since 2019 – including teams in deaf, powerchair and beach soccer. The extension continues this breadth and places particular focus on young women's and girls' access to sport. With the Women's World Cup 2027 in Brazil, a next major occasion is already set.
The expanded ambassador circle includes US national team coach Emma Hayes and defender Naomi Girma. The strategy behind it: the players' stories and their surroundings can be told through personal channels rather than relying solely on classic ads. VW marketing chief Rachael Zaluzec explains in an interview with Marketing Dive why closeness to the target audience now comes largely through the athletes' accounts.
We already examined this trend in athletes as creators in sports marketing and in CarMax's WNBA creator program. Volkswagen also relies on an unusually long timeframe: a tournament contact is meant to grow into a relationship across several seasons.
Matchday delivers content and sales contact points
The partnership is also tangible in the product. At the US women's match against Spain on 10 October, VW showcased the new Atlas for model year 2027. A limited Atlas x Banner mascot collection was linked with 30 T-shirts for fans before kickoff and a purchase prompt on the stadium screen. The official U.S. Soccer announcement describes the process.
This is a small but illustrative sponsorship design: stadium presence makes a product visible, a limited fan item gives the moment a story, and a shop offer creates a next step. A related mechanism is used by Sprite in its NBA campaign with QR codes and local creators.
Why this matters for German sports marketing too
Volkswagen also works with the DFB and the regional associations in Germany. With a view to the Women's Euro 2029 in Germany, the company, according to its newsroom, focuses on clubs, volunteering and women's and girls' football.
The combination of elite sport and grassroots is especially interesting for sponsors: in the stadium, reach and attention are bought, on social media faces and stories emerge, and at the grassroots level concrete contacts are made. Anyone planning sports partnerships should therefore negotiate not only media reach but also access to players, local formats, usage rights and fan activations.
