Canva is fundamentally reorganising its structure. 1.271 employees, or 22 percent of the workforce, are affected by the changes, co-founder and CEO Melanie Perkins said on 3 November 2026. Some will lose their jobs, while others are expected to change their function or move to a different location. At the same time, product development, growth and platform engineering are being brought together into one shared organisation.
For marketing teams who use Canva every day for social posts, videos, presentations or brand materials, this restructuring is especially relevant: Canva wants to turn individual tools into a more cohesive creative platform, faster.
Three departments become one product organisation
In the official announcement, Perkins describes a problem with the company's growth so far: even small improvements required coordination between product, growth and platform teams. In future, teams should take more ownership of work from the first concept through to delivery.
To do this, Canva is reducing management layers and overlaps between specialist areas. Sydney becomes the central hub for more product teams. From January 2027, most employees on a hybrid model are to come into the office two to three days a week, depending on their location.
The figure of 1.271 should not be equated with 1.271 layoffs. Canva has so far not broken down the numbers between job cuts, relocations and role changes. Perkins also speaks of slower growth for the first time in ten years.
Why this matters right now for social creative production
Canva has long since moved beyond being just an online editor for simple graphics. The platform combines templates, video, AI features, brand management and publishing. Back in February, Canva introduced new publishing integrations for services such as LinkedIn, Hootsuite and Sprout Social. As a result, a finished visual can become a post in the relevant publishing workflow more quickly, as Canva describes it in its product news.
In September, the company also added a ProSuite made up of Affinity, Cavalry, Flourish and Leonardo. The idea is that professional design, animation, data visualisation and variant production should connect more smoothly with Canva's collaborative interface.
This interface is exactly where the tension in modern marketing software lies: social teams expect more and more features within a single workflow, while internally many specialised products and teams have to be coordinated. The consolidation is meant to reduce these hurdles.
AI pressure is raising the pace
The restructuring comes at a time when generative AI is speeding up the creation of advertising assets. With Canva Brush, the company introduced its own vision-language model for supported design changes on 29 October; the personnel decision followed a few days later. Canva does not claim in its announcement that AI directly caused the job cuts.
For brands, this makes a fundamental question more important: how can AI-generated variants be edited, approved and published quickly while staying on-brand? Our background piece on Google's Gemini features for brand styles and connected creatives fits into this. Meta's Muse integration with Canva and company data also shows how these tools are converging. A concrete benchmark for production volume comes from Opella's system with 21.000 AI creatives and review agents.
Support for employees and next steps
Canva promises departing employees at least six months' salary including statutory entitlements, career support and – in countries where it is offered – twelve months of additional health insurance. New is a fund with grants of 10.000 US dollars for former staff who want to start their own projects; interested people can register until 14 December 2026.
For customers, the announcement provides for no specific product shutdowns or price changes. What will matter is whether the new organisation actually delivers the promised integration of design, AI and publishing workflows faster.
