Coca-Cola is having its media planning and media buying in the US and Canada handled by Omnicom in future. The new mandate is due to start on 1 December 2026. WPP keeps the international business outside these markets; Japan and South Korea remain with Dentsu. The decision was confirmed on 22 October Digiday and Adweek. For German advertisers, the link between social media budgets, data access and agency concentration is what matters most.
The award concerns media – not all creative work
Omnicom takes over the North American media mandate, not automatically all campaign ideas or Coca-Cola's entire brand management. Industry sources estimate the annual value of the affected media billings at 700 to 800 million US dollars. This figure describes advertising spend to be managed and is explicitly not revenue that Omnicom would book entirely as agency fees.
The reshuffle follows another major decision: PepsiCo moved its global media business to Publicis. This also ends the previous arrangement in which Publicis looked after Coca-Cola in North America. We have already put the background on PepsiCo, Publicis and possible agency conflicts into context.
Why social and creator advertising matter for this account
For an internationally integrated marketing budget, the cheapest cost per thousand impressions is not the only thing that counts. The agency has to coordinate campaigns across social platforms, video, retail media, trade and brand building. Coca-Cola had already publicly emphasised its growing focus on social ads and creator content 2025. A change of buying service can therefore also affect measurement systems, platform partnerships, data contracts and cooperation with creators – without this already implying a concrete change to individual campaigns.
After acquiring Interpublic Group (IPG), Omnicom is increasingly linking its media organisation with Acxiom, Real ID and the Omni platform. This connection is meant to make audience information usable across channels. How the group is simultaneously expanding AI-based product placement in streaming media buying is shown by another example.
Quarterly figures: separating growth from the acquisition effect
The Omnicom result for the third quarter 2026, a widely distributed company announcement from 22 October, reports 6,42 billion dollars in reported revenue. In the adjusted core activities, excluding divested or held-for-sale areas, revenue was 6,01 billion dollars and organic growth was 7,2 percent compared with the combined prior-year figure. The adjusted EBITA margin of the core activities was 18,2 percent.
Important: the large difference from the group's reported revenue of the previous year is largely due to the completed IPG acquisition. The figures do not allow the conclusion that the new Coca-Cola mandate has already increased Q3 revenue. Omnicom also names a target of 900 million dollars in cost synergies 2026. We have reported separately on the leadership and brand integration after the IPG deal.
New metric: customer base instead of brand love
Update from 23 October 2026: At the ANA conference, Coca-Cola's marketing chief Manolo Arroyo explained why his team no longer uses "brand love" as the most important success measure. According to him, earlier brand sympathy did not reliably correlate with business performance. Coca-Cola now prioritises the entire consumer base as a behavioural metric and examines which brand attributes trigger changes among specific target groups. This is a different yardstick from reach, likes or brand awareness.
Arroyo also reports a simplification of the portfolio: from previously more than 400 brands, about 170 remained; 32 brands exceeded the one-billion-dollar revenue threshold. Concentration can free up funds for recurring campaigns and more consistent data models, but it proves neither a standalone success of the new agency structure nor higher effectiveness of individual social ads.
Around 70 percent of digital budget is not a social impact study
According to Arroyo, Coca-Cola invested 2019 less than 30 percent of its media budget digitally and expects around 2026 percent by the end of 70. This refers to the share of all digital channels, not exclusively paid social. The production and technology organisation Studio X, created 2021, is meant to connect brand, media and customer data more closely. For agencies, this signals shifted workflows: campaign planning, creator productions, CRM and retail must interlock in a measurable way.
According to company statements, the consumer base has grown by 160 million people since the restructuring. This total is not a controlled incrementality measurement. The development may also have been influenced by distribution, pricing, assortment changes and macroeconomic factors beyond advertising. The joint change in digital share and buyer base therefore provides no causal proof that digital marketing alone won the new buyers.
The official partner decision of 22 October expressly confirms that Omnicom is to combine media, data, CRM, loyalty and creators in North America. The presentation was analysed by Marketing Dive on 23 October. The consequence for German brands: in a media pitch, first define which measurable behavioural indicator should rise, and only then assess channel shares or agency models.
What marketing teams should check in large media pitches
Transparency over pure buying power: Media contracts should disclose which platform costs, data fees, technology surcharges and agency remuneration arise. For proprietary media products, the underlying purchasing and resale terms are especially important.
Measurement instead of reach promises: Better terms or broader audience data are not yet proof of higher additional sales. Brands should define test design, incrementality and control groups within the pitch.
AI with approvals: Automated planning and steering need traceable budget limits, audit logs and a clear owner. Why AI costs and agent workflows must be examined separately is already covered in the Srocket magazine.
Context: The mandate reshuffles a large North American media unit. Whether this actually improves advertising effectiveness, creator fees or real platform costs is not yet proven.
