John Lewis launched its Christmas campaign 2026 on social media first on the 3 of November – and only brought it to television in the evening. The British retailer is first rolling out the three-minute film “Gloria and Pickles” via YouTube and Instagram, before 60-second versions follow in large TV environments. Behind the emotional story is a deliberately broad media plan: from TikTok and Reddit to connected TV, streaming and retail.
For marketing teams in general, the distribution logic is more interesting than the star cast. John Lewis is turning an elaborate Christmas film into a seasonal content system, while Christmas ad budgets in the UK are increasingly shifting towards social and retail media formats.
Social first, then TV: how the Christmas film is distributed
The campaign, developed by Saatchi & Saatchi, celebrates the 20 Christmas film anniversary from John Lewis. Oscar-nominated actress Kristin Scott Thomas plays the grandmother Gloria, Paul Whitehouse lends his voice to the talking toy dog Pickles. Sam Fender delivers a new recording of the Rolling Stones song “You Can't Always Get What You Want”. The film was directed by Lucy Forbes.
The film tells the story of a grandmother who, out of uncertainty, first wants to give her grandchildren money. Pickles brings her to a more personal idea: she transforms her study into a sparkling “Gran Cave” where she can spend time with her grandchildren. The motto is “Don't give up on giving”.
On 3 November at 7:30 British time John Lewis published the spot on its own online channels. The TV premieres on ITV and Channel 4 were only scheduled for the evening. The campaign then runs, according to John Lewis's official media plan, across Meta, TikTok, YouTube, Reddit, Pinterest and Snapchat, as well as Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, broadcaster video and connected TV offerings from Samsung and LG.
The long hero video delivers the story; behind-the-scenes material and interviews with the actors and the character Pickles extend it into additional social content. From one film production, several occasions for attention are created, not just a single annual TV slot. A similar distribution across social, streaming and shopping is pursued by Walmart with its Muppets Christmas campaign.
Why 2026 social is precisely what's pulling Christmas budgets
Timed with the launch, the British Advertising Association published its current AA/WARC advertising forecast: for the fourth quarter 2026, 14 billion pounds in advertising spend is expected, 8,2 percent more than a year earlier. During the Christmas trading period, social advertising is set to grow by 18,5 percent, retail media by 16,2 percent and addressable television by 15,1 percent. The overall TV market grows by only 1,6 percent in this forecast.
This explains the logic behind John Lewis's rollout. The big emotional narrative creates recognisability and conversation, while platform-appropriate video clips and commerce environments reach people in their concrete gift search. Target is simultaneously focusing on creators and shopping content; Meta is putting Reels and AI creatives at the centre for the holiday season.
A film whose details are also products
John Lewis anchors the story directly in its range. Pickles is based on the actually available Fisher-Price Little Snoopy, and the disco ball and decorations for Gloria's “Gran Cave” are also part of the offering. The music is additionally released physically; John Lewis intends to donate the proceeds from its CD and record sales to Action for Children.
The execution thus provides three points of connection for different channels: the emotional story for reach, the characters and filming for social content, and concrete products and gift ideas for retail. For comparison: e.l.f. relies on stop-motion and retail screens for its Christmas campaign – a different creative approach that also considers several environments from the outset.
For German brands, the decisive lever lies in planning before the shoot: Anyone who only produces the main spot and later cuts clips from it wastes possible social formats. John Lewis built press images, interviews, behind-the-scenes material and spots of varying lengths into a campaign system. This way the same creative core can be retold again and again throughout the fiercely contested shopping season.
