Whatnot launches its first national US brand campaign on 21 October 2026. As the opener, the live shopping platform introduces a 30-second spot featuring football player Cam Skattebo. The advertising push is meant to reach people who don't yet open Whatnot regularly – while the actual selling points continue to come from livestream sellers. The first TV airing is announced for Sunday, 25 October, during the New York Giants game. The official campaign announcement names additional placements during NFL and NBA broadcasts, as well as social, audio, streaming and out-of-home advertising in New York and Los Angeles.
One platform advertises sellers instead of a price
In the film Take a Shopping Trip, Skattebo jumps through several virtual shopping worlds. Real Whatnot sellers appear: Backyard Breaks for trading cards, Butcherstar for meat and House of Coop for vintage and home accessories. The spot was directed by Vedran Rupic and produced with the agency CALLEN. Two further films for fashion and collectibles are announced but not yet released.
This is decisive for the advertising strategy: Whatnot is not marketing a single discount, nor a creator as an interchangeable testimonial. The platform is promoting its live hosts as the reason to visit. Adweek reported on 21 October on the campaign launch. A measured sales effect or reach of the new spots is not available at the time of publication.
How big is live commerce really?
The background is measurable platform growth – with important caveats. In the State of Live Selling Report from January 2026, Whatnot reports 2025 billion US dollars in gross merchandise value from live sales for 8. This is not company revenue. The report combines the platform's own figures with a survey of live sellers in four countries; it does not allow representative revenue conclusions for all sellers.
For Germany, Whatnot cites an average sales proceed of 475 euros per livestream hour and growth of new fashion buyers of 650 percent compared with the previous year. Both values are provider claims. In particular, revenue per live hour does not automatically account for purchasing costs, staff, packaging, shipping or returns. As a separate comparison, EMARKETER reported, citing Whatnot, on Black Friday 2025 of more than 75 million dollars in daily sales and a tripling compared with the previous year.
What German brands can learn from the US spot
For German social commerce teams, the new stage in the marketing funnel is more interesting than the prominent casting: paid mass reach outside the platform is meant to lead into live shows, interaction and subsequent purchases. This differs from ordinary performance advertising, where the click leads directly to a product page.
A meaningful evaluation therefore separates campaign reach, new app users, first-time livestream visits, first orders and repeat purchases. Counting only code redemptions or follower numbers would overstate the actual effect. Comparisons with the TikTok Shop Black Friday approach, Kim Gravel's own live shopping platform and the particularly livestream-driven resale sales on TikTok Shop show how differently platform, show host and trade can be organised.
Classification: The announced TV and out-of-home plan initially concerns the USA, not a confirmed German TV rollout. Whatnot has thus placed a clear growth bet, but has not yet provided evidence that a national TV spot makes customer acquisition more profitable.
