On 27 October 2026, X announced a new photo resharing feature: anyone who long-presses an image on the platform can share it in their own post using "Post photo". The original account is linked as the source. According to X Creators, both the original account and the resharing account can earn through Original Content Rewards. How much money actually reaches each party, however, is not specified.
For photographers, meme creators and social media editorial teams, the key distinction is between visible attribution, legal permission to use, and monetisable reach. The new feature is not a blanket release for using other people's images.
What the photo feature changes compared with a normal repost
A normal repost spreads an existing post; a quote repost displays the original post along with your own comment. The new "Post photo" function, by contrast, concerns the individual image, which appears as part of a new post but remains connected to the original. This allows other accounts to share a photo with their own context without first downloading and re-uploading it.
X has announced this process for images; similar source references already existed for reshared videos. Still open are details on how the payout share is calculated, whether image authors can opt out, and reliable availability across all app versions. The brief official note supports neither a fixed split of revenue nor a guarantee for every photo repost.
Money is only available under conditions – and not for every view
What matters are the official rules for Original Content Rewards. In September, the programme replaced the previous revenue-sharing model. For an application, X names among other things a suitable Premium subscription, at least 500 verified followers and 500.000 home timeline impressions from verified users within 90 days. Even these thresholds do not guarantee acceptance.
For later payouts, X says that unique impressions from Premium users in the home feed count, provided at least half of the post is visible. Paid, artificial and repeated impressions do not count. The platform's promise that both sides can earn therefore explicitly does not mean payment per arbitrary reshare. How qualifying impressions are attributed between the parties in photo resharing is not yet explained in the public help material.
Even the switch from X to Original Content Rewards had already shifted the incentive system: original work instead of copied reach. The new photo sharing attempts to connect distribution with source attribution.
A credit is not an image licence
A particularly important point for German brands: a link to the original account does not automatically clarify usage rights. An account can distribute a photo without being the author or holder of all rights. X explicitly separates its monetisation terms from intellectual property. The German Patent and Trade Mark Office likewise distinguishes between recognition of authorship and exploitation rights.
If you want to reuse images for company posts, paid collaborations or outside X, you must therefore check the respective permission. This is not the same as the platform's internal share function. Re-uploading an image file or taking a third-party motif into advertising creatives does not become lawful automatically just because the name appears in the text.
Other networks are also trying to make originals more visible than copies. For YouTube Shorts this concerns recommendations; Pinterest, by contrast, ties the commercial use of creator pins to explicit advertising permissions. The mechanisms should not be equated.
What social teams should check now
For publishers and brands, the new feature is initially suitable as a source-friendly distribution route for commented photos. In practice, it should be documented which account uploaded the original, whether the repost remains visibly linked to the source in the respective app, and whether commercial use must additionally be agreed.
When reporting, the figures should be kept clearly separate: total reach, qualified premium impressions, traffic to the original account and actual payout are different metrics. X has so far not published any publicly verifiable earnings benchmarks for photo resharing. Anyone experimenting with purchased views also risks those impressions being explicitly not eligible for payment.
