Since 14 October 2026, WhatsApp also lets people without a WhatsApp account join voice and video calls. A host with an account creates a call link for this. Invitees open it in their computer's browser, enter their name and wait for approval. WhatsApp states up to 32 participants, end-to-end encryption and no time limit.
With this, the messenger moves closer to a video conferencing service. For businesses, the main benefit is that a conversation no longer has to fail because customers, freelancers or other contacts don't have WhatsApp installed.
A WhatsApp account is only needed on the host side
According to the official announcement from Meta, the route runs through WhatsApp's calls area: tap the plus symbol, create a call link and send it to participants. Only signed-in WhatsApp users can create such links. Guests can join single or group calls this way, but cannot add further people themselves.
The device question is decisive. Meta explicitly describes joining without an account via a computer browser. The announcement does not indicate that guests can join on any smartphone without signing in. Teams inviting customers to a conversation should therefore communicate the access route actually intended.
A call is possible, a regular WhatsApp chat is not
Guest Calling does not open all messenger functions to non-users. Guests cannot send messages and cannot see the phone numbers of other participants. They can, however, share their screen, react with emojis and raise a hand.
Every guest first lands in a waiting room. The host must admit them and can also remove participants again. According to WhatsApp, the calls remain end-to-end encrypted.
For a product discussion, a short interview or coordination with external service providers, this can remove the hurdle of creating an account. However, it is not a public customer chat widget and not an announced extension of the WhatsApp Business Platform. The difference matters: the tools for WhatsApp Business accounts and message templates concern a different communication channel.
WhatsApp has been building a meeting interface since July
The new guest model does not stand alone. Already on 28 July, WhatsApp had announced audio and video calls directly in the browser, as well as call transfer between devices, waiting rooms and further video improvements. The browser thus first became a fuller call interface for account holders. Now external guests can join without signing in.
Integrations with Google and Outlook calendars are announced for later in 2026 the year. According to Meta, users will then be able to create WhatsApp call links from calendar invitations. This calendar integration is still an announcement, not a feature launched on the 14 October.
Anyone planning communication processes for brands should therefore consider three things separately: spontaneous conversations via a guest link, regular messenger customer dialogue, and automated customer service. Meta is pursuing the latter with, among other things, its Business AI agent and API offerings and the AI features for shopping and service conversations.
The practical effect is less friction, not more reach
A single click on a link replaces the installation and registration for guests. However, this does not result in a new advertising placement or a measurable increase in reach for WhatsApp channels. Meta has also not yet announced any integration of Guest Calling into CRM or booking systems.
For teams, the benefit is more concrete: they can invite external conversation partners without first turning them into WhatsApp users. Whether this proves itself in customer conversations compared to established meeting applications depends on the actual browser experience and the administration features required.
