Pinterest is putting Shopping Ads more firmly into focus as an end-to-end performance channel. A recent four-step guide from the company takes merchants from catalogue, product Pins and tracking through automated campaigns to measurement and optimisation. Pinterest places particular emphasis on Performance+, promotions and clean commerce signals.
For marketers, this is more than a basics course. According to its own figures, Pinterest reached 640 million monthly active users in the second quarter of 2026, including 157 million in Europe. At the same time, the company is increasingly positioning its platform as a shopping and performance environment rather than just an inspiration network.
1. Set up catalogue, shop and tracking properly first
Pinterest advises businesses not to start with the campaign, but with the infrastructure. This includes a well-maintained shop on the profile, scalable product Pins and a connected product catalogue.
The catalogue can be synced via e-commerce integrations, the Pinterest API for Shopping or a product feed. The practical benefit: prices, availability and product data stay closer to the actual shop inventory.
According to Pinterest, tracking is just as important. The Pinterest Tag forms the basis for conversion measurement and optimisation. If you already look at social commerce across channels, you should not evaluate these signals in isolation. Our analysis of Social, Search and GenAI in the digital purchase process shows how strongly shopping journeys now move between several discovery channels.
2. Performance+ takes over more targeting and bidding logic
In the second step, Pinterest recommends combining trends and purchase intent with automated shopping campaigns. The central product for this is Pinterest Performance+.
Performance+ automates, among other things, targeting, bids and parts of creative delivery. Pinterest cites up to 50 percent fewer manual inputs for corresponding campaigns. Such figures come from the platform provider itself and are therefore not a general performance benchmark.
Besides Performance+, Pinterest names three further levers for the lower funnel:
- Dynamic retargeting for previous visitors and prospects,
- Local Inventory Ads for local availability,
- Promotions, which highlight offers directly within shopping ads.
Pinterest reports that Local Inventory Ads achieve a 1,7 times higher online conversion rate than standard campaigns in its own data set. Adding a promotion to a shopping campaign reportedly increased conversions by 18 percent. Merchants should also treat these values as platform benchmarks rather than guarantees.
That social platforms are directing more budget towards commerce is not unique to Pinterest. With TikTok, ad budgets around purchase-driven seasons are already rising significantly, while YouTube Shopping is now also being expanded more strongly in Germany.
3. Don't just measure clicks, improve commerce signals
After launch, Pinterest says businesses should first define what a good campaign result actually is. After that, the focus shifts to the quality of measurement signals and ongoing optimisation.
This is especially crucial for automated campaigns: the more platforms control bidding and delivery themselves, the more important correct conversion data, product feeds and clearly defined goals become. Poor signals cannot be fixed by more automation.
For merchants, this practically means that product data, tracking and campaign structure must be planned together. An isolated social ad test without clean commerce data hardly exploits the real advantage of such systems.
4. Use Pinterest Trends for seasonal demand
Pinterest additionally points to Pinterest Trends to identify rising search terms and seasonal interests early. This is particularly relevant because users often use the platform in a planning phase before making a concrete purchase decision.
The sensible workflow therefore is not just "upload a product feed and start ads". Merchants can first use trends as a demand indicator, align relevant products and creatives with them, and then use Performance+ for delivery and bidding.
What German merchants should take away
Pinterest is 2026 large enough that it should no longer automatically be treated as a niche channel in the commerce mix. The platform reported 640 million MAU worldwide for Q2, up eleven percent from a year earlier; in Europe the figure rose to 157 million.
The most important point of the shopping framework is structural: Pinterest wants to bring merchants into as closed a cycle as possible of product data, discovery, automated delivery and conversion measurement. Anyone testing the channel should therefore not only promote individual Pins, but first check whether catalogue, tracking and product data are robust enough for automated optimisation.
